Daniel Barrow is best known for his “manual animations” created by projecting, layering and manipulating drawings on an overhead projector. He combines such obsolete technologies with his live narration in unique performances that have been described as being like a graphic novel brought to life with the simplicity and wonder of a magic lantern show. Each of his episodic narratives develops from series of detailed collages in which the emotions and tribulations of his characters are explored.
Barrow has exhibited widely in Canada and abroad. In 2010 his work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of York University. He has performed at The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), PS1 Contemporary Art Center (New York), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), The International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s 2009 TBA festival, and the Gene Siskel Film Center (Chicago). Barrow is the 2007 winner of the Canada Council’s Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton award and the 2008 winner of the Images Festival’s Images Prize for his episodic performance Every time I see your picture I cry.
Barrow's work was seen at Jessica Bradley Art & Projects with the work of Shary Boyle, Cooper Battersby and Emily Vey Duke in the exhibition Fantasia. More about Daniel Barrow
