David Merritt's drawing and installation-based projects reflect patterns and systems of order found in nature. Organic patterns derived from debris, drift lines, and swirls of leaves provide the basis for large-scale installations and drawing pieces that address language, archival and museological systems of display and organization. Uniting these works is a sense of fragility, whether in the meticulous, interweaving lines of his drawings or his sculptures constructed with floating strands of unraveled sisal rope. Merritt's recent drawings reflect his knowledge and love of popular music. In these works, he links songs from the charts through repeated words and phrases. This process involves deploying a de-systematized inventory of popular 20th Century song titles and visually recharting their order along new thematic lines. More about David Merritt
