Born in Kamloops, British Columbia, Lisa Klapstock lives and works in Toronto where she first became known for her photograhic exploration of downtown alleys. In these works she traversed boundaries between public and private life, using the camera to highlight banal details and expose intimate worlds. In her most recent work, Ambiguous Landscapes, the artist creates views of the figure in undetermined spaces that confound our sense of depth and distance, often transforming the familiar into an almost abstract painterly plane.
Lisa Klapstock has done residencies in Finland and Holland. She has shown her work in these countries as well as in Denmark, and in Vancouver, Toronto and other centres across Canada.
In September 2006, Klapstock's full colour hardcover book Liminal was released. Published by the South Alberta Art Gallery this book is an exploration of Klapstock's artistic oeuvre of the past decade, including several illustrations of different series, and documents two substantial bodies of work: the laneway project and Ambiguous Landscapes.
Lisa premiered her new series Depiction at the News at Five during the 2006 Toronto International Art Fair.
