From: NICOLAS BAIER

Nicolas Baier lives and works in Montreal. He began his career as a painter and in the late 1990s decided that the new technologies available in photography could afford him the same possibilities for composition and invention. Baier has become known for his overt manipulation of a vast and personal collection of images that though 'real' are transformed into another, totally invented reality. His work has been the subject of several solo and group exhibitions in Canada, first gaining recognition through its inclusion in the Biennale de Montreal (2000). Baier had a solo at the Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal in 2003 and a major publication on his work is forthcoming in conjunction with a solo exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in April 2006.
In 2001, Nicolas Baier won the Prix Pierre-Ayot, awarded to a young artist on the basis of excellence. His work is found in various collections, including that of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal, The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.
