In her second solo exhibition at Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Toronto-based artist Marla Hlady continues her exploration of kinetic sculpture and sound works where common objects are expanded and animated. For this exhibition Hlady presents a new audio work based on Nina Simone’s 1976 Montreal Jazz Festival version of Feelings; and Leveller, a silent kinetic work perpetually seeking balance. Hlady will also show a new video and a selection of her recent brushed ink line drawings in which she renders the emotional, physical and metaphorical properties of sound visible.
As critic Dan Adler describes: “viewers are encouraged to dwell in a hybridized environment that combines visual and aural sensations…in a manner that facilitates unexpected insights into the intertwined histories and cultures of sound, perception, and popular entertainment.”
In 2011 Hlady will be the subject of solo exhibitions at Oakville Galleries and Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Centre, Buffalo. Past solo exhibitions include YYZ Artists’ Outlet, Toronto, 2008; Curtain Machine, a site-specific work for Gorlitzerstrasse 49, Berlin, 2008; Rodman Hall Art Centre, St. Catherines, 2007; Owens Art Gallery, 2004; Art Gallery of Calgary, 2003; and The Power Plant, Toronto, 2001. Selected group exhibitions include: NITE RIDE, a sound commission for Artengine, Ottawa, in 2009; Sweet Dreams and Flying Machines with Murray Favro at Museum London in 2008; The Idea of North, seen in Iceland in 2005 and Dalhousie Art Gallery, Halifax in 2006; The Networked City, a site work sponsored by the city of Toronto and InterAccess Gallery, Toronto, 2006; The One, NGC 224 Gallery, Brooklyn, New York, 2005; Generally, But Not Always, Apexart Gallery, New York, 2002; Officina America, Museo di San Domenico, Imola, Italy, 2002; Tracy Lawrence Gallery, Vancouver, 2001; Machines Festives, La Centrale, Montreal, 1999; and Flywheel, The Nunnery, London, UK, 1999. Hlady was nominated for the Sobey Art Award in 2002.
The artist would like to acknowledge the support of the Ontario Arts Council and Artengine.
