Viewer's were first entranced by Nicolas Baier's digital alchemy when he emerged to wide critical acclaim in the 2000 Montreal Biennial. Trained as a painter, Baier quickly recognized the potential of creating images in the same spirit but with new technological tools. For him the world contains images everywhere - images that he has captures photographically and transforms into new, often abstract visions that at first seem remote from their material origins. This new body of work reflects his interest in the extraordinary microcosms within minerals, which often resemble aspects of the larger natural world of earth, sky and water. The colour and structure entrapped in mineral formations inevitably reach back to the cosmos – the origins of the universe. For the first time, Baier is showing sculpture related to his photographic works and light boxes.
In 2003 the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal organized Scènes de genre, a major survey exhibition of Baier’s work and the following year he created works for the Musée des beaux arts de Montréal in Tableaux de chasse, an exhibition that was installed throughout the museum in response pieces in the permanent collection. In 2010 Baier’s recent work was seen in the major solo exhibition Paréidolies organized by the Musée régional de Rimouski, which toured to the National Gallery of Canada and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, among others. Over the past decade Nicolas Baier’s work has been seen in group exhibitions across Canada and in Europe. He has also completed several major commissions, most recently for the new offices of Goodmans LLP, Toronto.
