Derek Sullivan
October 29, 2005 — December 03, 2005
Toronto-based artist Derek Sullivan was selected by Richard Rhodes, Editor of Canadian Art magazine, for "The News at 5" at the 2004 Toronto International Art Fair. Earlier this year Sullivan particpated in the international group exhibition "Dedicated to you, but you weren't listening" at the Power Plant.
Concurrent with his solo exhibition at Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Sullivan is exhibiting a new project at the Toronto Sculpture Garden* where he has made a witty and generous public gesture inspired by a typical turn-of-the-century Parisian kiosk. Sullivan's new sculptures for this exhibition take their cue from Constantin Brancusi, combining his famous endless column form with the endless possibilty of formal metamorphosis as layers of information are potentially added to the columns. In a series of new drawings, Sullivan presents imaginary urbanscapes that map a familiar material culture of the throw-away and everyday.
Sullivan has exhibtited his work in Toronto, Vancouver, Shanghai and Berlin.
*Sullivan’s project “Kiosk, 2004-2005,” commissioned by the Toronto Sculpture Garden, is on view until April 15, 2006, at 115 King Street East (at Church St.).
