GOODNIGHT IRENE proposes a messily engaged and wordy graphic face-off between draftsmen extraordinaire Jason McLean and Adrian Norvid who have both participated in exhibitions at the gallery in the past. Ushering us into a new year full of new hope and promise, Norvid and McLean’s works are formed out of fancy, daily drudgery, personal notation and some of the best turns of hand to be found in drawing today.
Since the gallery opened in May 2005, Jessica Bradley Art + Projects
has initiated eight special projects, often bringing gallery artists together with guest artists. These group and two-person shows have been assembled around thematic links between different approaches to art making or focused on a dialogue between specific bodies of work.
Jason McLean was born in London, Ontario and graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design, Vancouver, where he developed his well-known practice of drawing informed by performance events, a range of collaborations and his involvement with zine culture and mail art. McLean recently moved to Toronto where he continues to make complex and richly annotated drawings including the recent large pieces for this exhibition.
Born in London (England), Adrian Norvid received a BFA in Music and an MFA in Studio Art from York University. Norvid’s work received prominent critical acclaim last summer in The Quebec Triennial, Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed, mounted by the Musée d’art contemporain, Montreal. Norvid teaches drawing at Concordia University, Montreal.
