Lisa Klapstock’s work explores the relationship between photographic depiction and visual perception. She works in series, pursuing her themes over extended periods. This new and continuing body of work was initiated over the past three years during residencies in the Netherlands, Finland and Banff, Alberta, as well as in her native Kamloops, British Columbia.
In these photographs and videos Klapstock returns to her abiding interest in how our perception of space and scale are altered by the optical limitations of the camera. She abandons her signature urban environments full of everyday incident and unexpected detail, instead presenting limitless and seemingly deserted views of open space. Klapstock uses the camera to transform the natural environment into an abstract, almost painterly surface.
