Acclaimed Montreal artist Nicolas Baier continues to explore the potential of digital photography in this new series, constructing fictional spaces by gathering and manipulating images of the world at his doorstep. Several images have been produced through scanning an object or surface directly, without the intervention of a camera. Working with the scanned material, Baier creates seamless digital collages with an uncanny appearance of depth and texture. Initially trained as a painter, Baier adopts the limitless possibilities of the photographic medium today as an equally satisfying means for invention and transformation. Many of his images recall the gestural expansiveness of modernist painting. As critic Olivier Asselin has noted, Baier's uses the computer as a studio, engaging a historical dynamic that encompasses painting, analog photography and digital imaging.
